Level 2: Flams

In this ZILDJIAN WORKOUT episode, Andrew Barlow takes you through a flam exercise that not only warms up the hands, works on flam quality with single handed flams, flam taps, swiss army triplets and flam threes, but encourages a relaxed flow and approach to the drum. A great exercise to start your practice session while you jam along with your favorite tunes!

Andrew Barlow is a multi-faceted percussionist with over 15 years of teaching, composing and performance experience. He has been invited to perform on 3 continents, performed in Japan, South Korea, Canada, and all 48 continental states. Currently, he serves on percussion faculty at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke and is pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

As an artist, Andrew’s Broadway touring credits include roles as a Percussionist and the Percussion Manager for the Tony and Emmy Award winning Broadway show Blast! Off-Broadway credits include The Golem of Havana and Billy, Goat, Gruff the Musical. Andrew has performed and recorded with Madonna, Kevin Antunes, American Idol’s Kimberley Locke, Diamond Rio and legendary drum set artist Swiss Chris. In the Fall of 2020, he was blessed with the invitation to perform and conduct the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Percussion Ensemble at the Percussive Arts Society (PAS) International Percussion Ensemble Competition showcase concert.

Composition and arranging is a constant in Andrew’s career. His music has been performed internationally in Japan, Canada, and can be heard throughout scholastic percussion ensembles, universities, and within the Drum and Bugle Corps and Winter Guard International community. As an active member of the Percussive Arts Society, Andrew is a member of the PAS Composition Committee where he contributes original compositions to Rhythm! Scene, presents panel discussions at PASIC, and promotes the creation of new works and education for percussion composition.
